I’m a Virgo. My friends Carol and Kathleen are both Libras. So instead of having separate birthday parties, all three of us decamped, along with our husbands, to Sonoma for one big birthday bash.

The girls all went horseback riding. I’m on a quarterhouse named Pumpkin. She’s, well, pumpkin-colored and sweet as can be. We’re trotting through Jack London State Park, the leaves are fluttering from the oak trees that line the path.

Our guide is giving us the history of property and how the residence Jack London built (Wolf House) burned to the ground before he and his wife Charmian ever got to move in. What is still standing is the giant stone pig pens he built (the Pig Palace) for his prized pigs. Frankly, I’m getting a little bored. I’m hoping we get to gallop some. I want to run!

We hired a Sonoma Wine Country Concierge, Booker & Butler, to line up everything for the weekend:

  • Our horseback ride.
  • The vintage bi-plane ride the guys went on.
  • Winery visits.
  • A picnic we went on.
  • And a private chef who’ll be cooking for us tonight.

Here’s a snippet from his menu: Amuse bouche of poached egg with chanterelle mushrooms, truffle butter, brioche toast, Pici al Ragu — which translates to Tuscan pasta with wild boar sauce — and grilled hanger steaks with red wine truffle sauce. Yum! The chef brought in a sommelier who paired wines with each dish. It was way better than anything we could have had at a restaurant.

This has definitely been a birthday celebration for the books!
